At Kind Health Hub, we believe in dignity, fairness, and evidence‑based advocacy. That’s why we have launched a petition to end blanket cash withdrawal restrictions placed on older adults. These policies are unjust, ageist, and unsupported by clear evidence. They punish individuals instead of criminals, and they affect everyone — from GPs and surgeons to nurses, firefighters, and even politicians.
🔍 The Missing Evidence
Fraud is a serious issue, but the data on cash‑only scams is incomplete. National surveys do not separate cash scams from other fraud types, leaving us with a distorted picture. What we do know is that older adults are more likely to report fraud — not necessarily more likely to fall for it. This reporting bias has been misinterpreted, leading to sweeping restrictions that treat all older people as vulnerable.
Without transparent, age‑specific data, these restrictions are built on assumption rather than fact.
⚖️ Why Blanket Restrictions Are Unfair
- They stereotype older adults as incapable of managing money.
- They ignore professional competence — many over‑60s are still working as doctors, surgeons, nurses, firefighters, and MPs.
- They punish the wrong people — individuals trying to access their own money, rather than the criminals committing fraud.
- They erode dignity and autonomy, replacing trust with interrogation.
🤔 The Prime Minister Example
Consider this: the Prime Minister himself is over 63. Does that automatically make him more susceptible to scams? Should his age alone disqualify him from running the country? Of course not. Leadership, financial literacy, and resilience are not determined by age — they are shaped by experience and awareness.
If the Prime Minister can lead the nation at 63+, why should other older adults be treated as suspects when they simply want to withdraw their own money?
💬 A Real Story
Recently, we witnessed a man in a bank trying to withdraw cash for a funeral. He was questioned for over twenty minutes, visibly distressed, and eventually left without the money. This was his money. He had not agreed to these restrictions when he opened his account.
This is not protection. This is humiliation. And it must stop.
📢 Our Petition
We are calling for:
- The removal of blanket cash withdrawal restrictions based on age.
- Transparent, method‑specific fraud data to inform policy.
- Respectful, case‑by‑case support instead of suspicion.
- A commitment from banks and government to uphold dignity and autonomy for all customers.
⚖️ Age Discrimination and the Law
Under the Equality Act 2010, age is a protected characteristic. Treating all people over 60 as inherently vulnerable is unfair, unjust, and potentially unlawful. We call on Parliament, the Treasury, and the Financial Conduct Authority to investigate whether current practices breach the Equality Act.
🌟 Next Steps
This petition will be presented to Parliament, the Prime Minister, the Chancellor, and the Treasury Select Committee. We will also lobby regulators such as the FCA and work with advocacy organisations like Age UK and Citizens Advice to amplify the voices of those affected.
